Infertility, Prenatal & PostpartumĀ  - Kelly V. Karjoo, PsyD, CMNCS, CIMHP

Mother Holding Baby

When the journey to becoming a parent looks different than you expected, it is entirely normal to experience a complex mix of emotional and behavioral difficulties.

The journey to parenthood can be challenging when it doesn’t happen easily or immediately. Infertility can be emotionally devastating, with grief as intense as losing a living child, especially after miscarriage or repeated miscarriages. Many silently endure this pain, feeling isolated while witnessing others’ pregnancies. Anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy are common. I provide a safe space to express emotions, process grief, and explore coping strategies as you navigate this overwhelming journey.

Pregnancy brings a whirlwind of emotions—excitement, apprehension, and wonder. Amidst physical changes and anticipation, striking a delicate balance can be difficult. The unknowns loom large, making every decision feel crucial. It’s normal to have both positive and negative emotions about becoming a parent. Together, we’ll explore this significant life change, addressing fears, celebrating milestones, and embracing the transformative process.

Becoming a parent changes your entire life the moment your baby is born or placed in your arms. While there are many wonderful moments, it’s also incredibly hard work, often done with little training, sleep, or personal time. New parents are expected to step into brand new roles immediately, making it natural to encounter hurdles. I can help you establish new routines, prioritize self-care, and develop effective stress management skills.

Postpartum depression is also a common experience for many mothers. It’s important to know that feeling down during this time is not something to be embarrassed or ashamed of. The symptoms can range from mild sadness to more severe conditions like postpartum psychosis. Therapy, sometimes in conjunction with medication, can make this challenging time more manageable.
